Naamkaran is the ritual of naming a newborn, typically conducted on the twelfth day following the child's birth. Names are often derived from Hindu mythology, each carrying significant meaning. This ceremony is one of the most crucial events in a person's life, as it provides an identity to the individual.

According to the Rig Veda, the naming process involves four key elements: the Nakshatra name, the name of the deity associated with the month, the family deity's name, and the commonly used name by which the child will be known.

The Naamkaran ceremony is particularly important as it marks the first significant event in a baby's life. On this day, the child's Kundli is also created and presented before the family deity to seek blessings. Based on the Kundli, a Brahman recommends an appropriate letter for the child's name.

The Naamkaran Puja is performed alongside a Hawan, where the Brahman offers prayers to the family deity and the spirits of ancestors, asking for their blessings and protection for the child. The child is then held in the father's lap, who softly whispers the chosen name into the child's ear, often using a betel leaf to guide the words.
